The Stare Down
Gorton Creek Falls · Gorton Creek · Wyeth Campground · Columbia River Gorge · Cascade Locks · Oregon · USA
Like wintry gargoyles exchanging icy stares, menacing formations stacked upon each other line the flanks of 148-foot-tall Gorton Creek Falls during a cold and startlingly windy outing with Terence Lee, Justin Poe, and Lance Rudge.
There were a couple of casualties of war on this day, though the one I suffered when my left foot broke through a deceptively thin shelf of ice over a plunge pool below Gorton was relatively minor. Terence, on the other hand, was not quite so lucky when his Nikon D800E, atop his sturdy tripod similarly set upon deceptively infirm terrain, took a slow-(but-not-slow-enough-)motion dive into an ice-cold grave, much as he witnessed my Sony a7R do two winters prior at Ponytail Falls.
