The Art of Elusion

One summer Sunday, I had this far-fetched notion I could drive out to the Columbia River Gorge and go on a scramble hike on an obscure off-trail waterfall for some seclusion.
Part of the problem was that new construction took out the unofficial pullout spots along the highway, meaning that I'd have to park at one of the established lots at either of the nearest trailheads. Predictably, they were packed to overflowing, with cars lining the adjacent roadways a good quarter mile or more. The potential prospects of solitude couldn't revive my mood, though, soured as it was by the raucous throng of people streaming toward the trails. That was plenty cue for me to go looking elsewhere.
Hours later and many miles away I found what I was looking for...a beautiful waterfall, a cocaphany of sounds unpolluted by human disruption, and, as in reward for the day’s worth of failures and frustrations, a rainbow graciously appeared for the rare trifecta.
