High on my bucket list of experiences is walking amongst the redwoods, but until I can find the time to visit I'll gladly take a 'consolatory' stroll through pockets of more local old-growth Douglas-fir and western hemlock forests that have thus far managed to elude the saws of civilization. The rhodies were still days away from being in full bloom, but the rich verdancy of the forest floor and relative seclusion from the teeming summer crowds more than made up for that. Ashley, Terence, and I later learned that this was due to the gated closure of a the main access road that we somehow fortunately had managed to circumvent on the way in (albeit by way of a very rough road).
