A graceful arc defines the 88-foot plunge of Ponytail Falls as Horsetail Creek descends a basaltic staircase of monumental proportions en route to the Columbia River, culminating in 214-foot-tall Horsetail Falls thundering down beside the trailhead. Ponytail remains my favorite of the two for many reasons, but mostly for its simple elegance, svelte lines, and charming amphitheater. An ideal combination of partial cloud cover, early evening light, and late summer conditions allowed for an extra-long exposure here, smoothing out the whitewater and contrasting it nicely against the finely textured surrounds.
