The haggard heft of a once-stately western hemlock stands steadfastly beside the multitiered drop of Alexander Falls, hanging on for dear life as if unable to bear parting from such a vision of grace and power. Despite the limited angles afforded by the viewing platform some eighth- or quarter-mile's distance from the falls, I could easily sympathize as I stood there studying the elegant geometry of the 173-foot-tall cascade. This 160mm take captures less than half the waterfall's full height, but I found the mixture of lines, textures, and shadows it afforded more pleasing than a full shot could offer.
