Striking lines drape the alien landscape during an attempted snowshoe trek to June Lake near Mt. St. Helens, in a phenomenon I still have yet to find an explanation for (though I think it may have something to do with daily temperature fluctuations about the freezing point). I still have a bit of PTSD from this hike due to the development of severe right knee pain that I feared was indicative of permanent damage (fortunately not the case). I think it was a case of poor snowshoeing technique--trying to lift my shoes clear of the snow and plopping them down rather than just shuffling along--that caused some undue torque on the joint.
