Columbines are always one of the delights of spring we look forward to most after a wet and gloomy winter. We have native western columbine (A. formosa) slowly spreading through our woodland garden, their beautiful scarlet red flowers dancing gracefully well above the foliage. A different species (A. longissima) and several cultivars pepper our sunnier borders, where they’ve hybridized and helped fill in gaps, knitting the garden together to a more pleasingly natural effect than we could have managed with a deliberate effort. The seedlings of Kirigami Light Blue & White (or perhaps their hybrids) have shown far more muted colors–almost pure white in some instances–than the original here, but as long as they’re not a dingy brown, we’ll always welcome them to do what they will in our garden.
