Geranium phaeum var. phaeum 'Samobor'
Named for the Croatian town near where this variant was discovered, Samobor geranium (mourning widow; dusky cranesbill) has been a subtly striking addition to our woodland garden, where it’s chocolate-smudged leaves (just visible here) and royal purple flowers quiver and dance in the breeze. We have it underplanting a Shin Deshōjō’ Japanese maple, along with an O’Byrne hybrid podophyllum, Solomon’s seals, heaths, and hellebores. Though it may get a little ‘lost’ in the broader matrix of the garden, it has no trouble drawing the eye of astute passersby and inviting closer inspection.
