Podophyllum peltatum
Mayapple (American mandrake) shoots emerging in spring, their leaves still yet to unfurl like resort parasols awaiting the onset of sunny weather. We have four species or varieties in our budding collection thus far, unless ‘Kaleidoscope’ miraculously went into hiding for a year (one can hope–we had a Trillium erectum show up this year after last being seen in 2021). The genus is among Ashley's favorites, and I don’t blame her with their accent-table forms and varied leaf patterns. We’re particularly looking forward to adding the wildly alien-looking P. delavayi to the mix someday.
