Wonderfall
Ramona Falls · Mt. Hood National Forest · Rhododendron · Oregon · USA
I've been to Ramona Falls more than half a dozen times, and every time I see her it's like falling in love all over again. Cold mist and even colder rain couldn't put a damper on my spirits on this day, and even though I'd come with intentions of fielding a very different comp that I'd struck out on during an earlier trip due to water droplets on the camera lens, this one left me with the greatest sense of awe. I usually don't like having people in my landscapes, but I decided to keep the couple in the lower left corner because I think it captures the scale better with them there (as with At the Crossroads of Oblivion and Between Giants). Between us loomed a huge western hemlock, its perfectly cylindrical trunk lending counterbalance to the scene as Ramona's 120-foot cascade fans out nearly as wide as it is tall.
It's not quite the same as being there, but click here for video.
