Imaginary Walls

White-tailed tropicbirds (Phaethon lepturus) cavort gracefully in the sunlit spray of Wailoo Falls.
Though I'm fond of the moment this photo captures (and whatever deeper message you may choose to take from it), I must confess it also fills me with a touch of bittersweetness because, from a technical standpoint, I goofed: I’d prefocused on the splash pool’s surface mistakenly believing that I’d dialed enough depth of field to hold the elegant birds in focus as they whizzed by, but when viewing this image at 50% magnification or more my faux pas becomes evident. Sometimes, though, I think an image is compelling enough that it can transcend its own photographic shortcomings, and I'm hoping this is the conclusion some might reach here, too... even if they may comprise the minority.
