A charming fire engine-red boathouse reflects the golden light of dusk on the shores of Solbjørnvatnet, a gentle breeze adding some feathery brushstrokes of texture to the lake's placid surface. Few scenes encapsulate the spirit of Lofoten more than a red cabin or similar structure set upon a rocky shoreline, and as romanticized as such simple imagery may seem, in my time there I got the sense that it’s not that far off from the everyday reality of a life lived on this idyllic collection of Arctic islands. I think it’s the nostalgia of a now far too distant existence untainted by the cumbersome (over)complexities of adulthood that causes this photo to resonate with me as much as any I shot during a week filled with dramatic sunrises, sunsets, and Northern Lights. No, no need to build me a Burj Khalifa when a simple little boathouse will do...
