Gilded by the turn of season, a western larch emerges from the fog with commanding stage presence in the midst of a montane forest dominated by Douglas-fir. Larch is a deciduous species masquerading as an evergreen, blending inconspicuously into the rolling dark-green subalpine slopes of Mt. Hood’s eastern foothills in the warmer months before some cool-weather stimulus rouses them from their estival supporting roles and spurs them to autumnal stardom.
